Biography
Eric Pillai’s inclination towards music began early on when he watched a Solid State Logic (SSL) mixing console in a VHS tape of The Police’s Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic. That fascination for music led to him acquiring his first guitar (a gift from his Aunt Philo) and learning guitar lessons with his Uncle Tony every Sunday. His aunts and mother encouraged him to chase his passion and pursue a musical education in London, where he studied guitar at Rock School Ltd., met one his mentor/tutor, John Mizzarolli, and finished a ‘City & Guilds in Sound Engineering’ course from the City of Westminster College in Paddington, London in 1996.

Here's a more detailed look at his journey ⸻

When he was nearing his graduation, he read an article featuring Galactica Studios in Audio Media Magazine, February 1996 issue. Out of sheer hunger to make his mark, Eric wrote to Galactica Studios applying for a job and had an offer letter in hand before he graduated. On his return to Bombay in June 1996, he realised that his education had given him a good grasp of the theory, but working firsthand in the industry gave him real world exposure to the practicalities of the Indian musical landscape. He learnt how to work with Indian musical instruments – a tabla, a sarod, a dholak, a chanda – thanks to his mentor, boss, and reputed sound engineer, Bishwadeep Chatterjee. He went on to get hired as a third assistant at Spectral Harmony Studios in 1997, rising to Technical Director in 2003. The studio burning down in a fire accident in 2005 led to Eric going independent, founding Future Sound of Bombay, working out of his friend, Anish Gohil’s spare bedroom, until he formally acquired a studio space at the end of 2005.
Eric’s vast repertoire of work includes working with many of the biggest names from their early days in the industry – Pritam, Adnan Sami, Sajid-Wajid, Euphoria, Silk Route, Mithoon, Sachin-Jigar, Meet Bros-Anjjan, Ankit Tiwari, Vishal-Shekhar, Tanishk Bagchi, Azeem Dayani, and Vikram Montrose, production houses such as Dharma Productions, Maddock Films, Salman Khan Films, Nadiadwala Grandson, and Red Chillies, as well as music labels – Sony Music, Universal, and T-Series. It is a mark of trust and respect that so many of these artists have continued to work with Eric for every single work of art they produce.
Through decades of collaborating with every artist, Eric’s singular focus is to honour the artist’s vision while adding value to every piece of music through the mix. True to his approach, he has always let the work speak for itself.
Despite his meteoric rise to success, his deepest desire is to leave a rich legacy behind – one that doesn’t necessarily speak of him by name, but one that leaves an indelible mark – in his music being relevant to every individual listening – even decades from now.
